freak goal hands euro victory

The Saturday side travelled to Dagenham this week to face  Euro Dagenham side which they had faced during the previous season in the County Cup, being defeated 3-0.

On one of the roughest surfaces ever seen, good football was difficult but credit to both sides producing a terrific tight match which could have gone either way.

Gavin Hayes was the first to try as he broke clear moments from the start and had his effort blocked. Hilly and Brogan tested the defence early on with blistering pace and plenty of pressure. Andy made a good impression on his first appearance of the season and showed all of that passion and guile we have been accustomed to.

Hilly could have had us ahead following a corner which came across to him but his left foot volley flew over the bar.

The first and only goal however, as it would transpire, came from the unlikeliest of places as Euro's goalkeeper belted a ball down field at rate of knots and it too a couple of unfriendly bounces before finding the top corner for 1-0.

Euro had some good chances too as they stepped on the gas in the latter part of the half and could have doubled the lead but for a goal bound clearance.

The second half was much of the same with a number of half chances at each end but without really testing either keeper. Brogan again kept the defence on its toes and Hilly dropping into the backline shored things up and limited the Euro attackers to long range shots.

The chance of the half and the one which should have seen an equaliser, Scott Jacobs putting pressure on the defender who made the mistake and allowed Scott in behind but his effort going into the side netting, a goal he would have deserved on his energetic  performance.

And so the game finished 1-0, with the freakiest of goals settling the tightest of games.
